Local Farms Feeding Families In Need

Kentucky faces both a hunger and agricultural crisis. Our state is one of the most food-insecure in the country, food prices remain high, and the number of family farms continues to decline. We believe communities are strongest when local farmers, local kitchens, and local people are connected through a food system that works for everyone.

Food Security Begins Close To Home

The Berry Center established Our Home Place Meat in 2017 to connect Kentucky family farmers to regional markets through a model rooted in fair compensation, high animal welfare standards, good land management, and neighborly relationships.

This model has also made it possible to provide healthy meat to Kentucky families facing hunger, disaster or other dire circumstances.

Neighbors Feeding Neighbors

At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, The Berry Center and Our Home Place Meat partnered with more than 10 hunger relief organizations to provide meat to 30,000 of Louisville’s most food insecure families. We were the only organization in the area that was able to quickly source meat to fill this need. Since our first donations in 2020, The Berry Center and Our Home Place Meat have donated nearly $300,000 worth of humanely raised meat to Kentucky’s most vulnerable residents as a result of disaster and economic crises

The Berry Center has committed to address both chronic and crisis related food insecurity by establishing a permanent philanthropic enterprise through which we consistently supply local meat to food banks and organizations feeding our food insecure neighbors.

“There is, then, a politics of food that, like any politics, involves our freedom. We still sometimes remember that we cannot be free if our minds and voices are controlled by someone else. But we have neglected to understand that we cannot be free if our food and its sources are controlled by someone else… One reason to eat responsibly is to live free.”

— Wendell Berry, “The Pleasures of Eating,” 1989

Help Our Work Grow

Join us in creating a regional food system that supports farmers while supplying healthy, local meat to vulnerable populations.

This campaign consists of two phases. In the first we will raise $100,000 to donate meat for approximately 17,000 meals annually. In phase two we will maintain consistent donations and work to grow the program by 10%.

We hope to grow our philanthropic meat donations and build relationships with funders to continue this practice in perpetuity.

A smaller, regional food system is key to bridging our urban-rural divide. We are working toward an equitable farming future that cares for the earth and for farmers, and where all families have access to healthy, local food.

Show Your Support at the Beef Bash

Every fall, Our Home Place Meat and The Berry Center host the Beef Bash in New Castle, Kentucky. Local chefs prepare small bites showcasing our signature beef.

It's a celebration of farmers, local food, and community. All profits go towards our food relief initiative!
