Our Vision

The Berry Center established Our Home Place Meat in 2017 to develop a cooperative for small to midsize livestock farmers to sell local meat to regional markets. Beginning in our Home Place, Henry County Kentucky, we are building a healthy food and farm model that can be replicated in communities throughout the country.

Based on agrarian writings of well-known author Wendell Berry, Our Home Place Meat is guided by these values: Fair compensation for farmers, high animal welfare standards, good farming and land management practices and neighborly, cooperative relationships.

With the partnership with Trackside Butcher Shoppe in Campbellsburg, KY, a humanely certified processor, Our Home Place Rose Beef is available throughout the year.

‘It all turns on affection,’ invoked Wendell Berry in his famous 2012 Jefferson Lecture, the US government’s highest honor for achievement in the humanities. Affection for creatures, for people, and for the planet – that’s Our Home Place Meat.

Sharing Wendell Berry

“I dislike the thought that some animal has been made miserable to feed me. If I am going to eat meat, I want it to be from an animal that has lived a pleasant, uncrowded life outdoors, on bountiful pasture, with good water nearby and trees for shade.”
